[INTERVIEW] 130521 - VIXX's Version of 'Jekyll and Hyde', "The nudity wasn't something obscene, but a thriller"

“Although Hyuk isn’t 19 years old yet, it’s not complete exposure just because he’s taking off some clothes… It’s a concept where we get reborn into the wicked man, Hyde, with a broken heart.”

- Before Going In:

The idol group, VIXX, whose name stands for the best voice, visual, and value. After chanting the meaning of their name last May, they’ve somehow grown into a group to match their name. After debuting with ‘SUPER HERO’, VIXX, who set their first foot forward in the 2012 music industry that was filled with over 30 newcomer idol groups, found their own colors through ‘Rock Ur Body’, ‘On and On’, and ‘hyde’. VIXX, who shows the dual sides of their normal selves and men who transformed into devils through the ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ concept, are the ‘six Hydes’ that hold sadness of men who have gotten hurt from love. I’ll be telling the story of six members who are charged up with 600% confidence.

- Chapter 1: About the 19+ rating that the youngest, Hyuk, has to close his eyes for:

The teaser of ‘hyde’ was restricted to youths. This is because of the members’ shocking nude concept. During the filming, even the members were shocked. According to their leader, N, “there were even members who opposed it.” The ‘all-nude filming’ that they only found out about 10 minutes prior to the filming, was especially harsh(?) on the youngest, Hyuk. Hyuk isn’t even 19 years old yet.

Hyuk couldn’t see the ‘hyde’ music video. Due to the members’ scary expressions and strange proprs, the music video received a rating of 19+.

“We don’t think of it to be racy. We were determined from the start. Also, taking off clothes isn’t exposure. It’s a concept where we show a man being reborn into the wicked man, Hyde, after falling in the sadness of love. There isn’t a person who wears clothes when they get born right? After understanding the concept like that, I got goosebumps all over my body. It was really a thrill to send a definite message out to others in a definite mold.” (Ravi)

- Chapter 2: About the confidence given by ‘On and On’

This transformation for VIXX was truthfully something that was predicted. This is because the 6 members created a vampire image during ‘On and On’ promotions by wearing various colors of circle lenses. At that time, VIXX had a lot of concern over whether the reactions were positive or not as they watched their fans’ reactions of “it’s shocking”, “they completely changed”.

“At that time, we wondered if it was the right thing to do. However, we realized that our strong point and different charisma was the fact that the more we promoted, the more the anticipation for us rose from people. It was the opportunity for us to allow people to think, ‘they do something different’ and that we’re not a team that follows the trend like other idol groups. That’s why we were able to have more confidence in preparing for ‘hyde’. Expressions, visuals, lyrics, stage performance, and music, we perfected a storyline for all of these factors to sum up into one. We would definitely like the receive the reaction of ‘VIXX shows something past our imagination’.” (N)

- Last chapter: One year since debuting, the growth during that time

2012, where there were over 100 groups that debuted as rookies. However, when you think of the groups that survived, you could count it with 10 fingers. VIXX is among those groups, and through ‘hyde’, they could become one of the first fingers raised. How much does VIXX think they grew in one year.

“We found a naturalness in our singing and dancing.” Hyuk showed his mature inner thoughts by adding, “I work hard in order to not make it feel like I’m the team’s youngest.” Hongbin, who said, “I had a fear of cameras”, has completely been cured of it, and Ken also gained the movements of a pro as he stated, “I was the hole in dancing.” Ravi went one step higher as a rapper by personally writing the lyrics for ‘hyde’ along with all the other songs in the album and sharing the credits for writing lyrics. And more than anything, the biggest growth shown by VIXX is the fact that they grasped onto their color as a complete whole as explained by N when he stated, “Each of us found our strong points.”

“We feel like we have just taken our first steps towards becoming a ‘good singer’. If they realized who we were before as ‘celebrities’, they now say ‘it’s VIXX’.
